Die Konrad Fischer Galerie freut sich, die dritte Einzelausstellung von Rita McBride unter dem Titel „Gesellschaft“ ankündigen zu dürfen.
Der Begriff der Gesellschaft ist seit jeher ein problematischer: dass es sie als Form einer organisierten wie organisierenden Gemeinschaft von Individuen gibt, ist auch heute kaum zu bestreiten - und das trotz Margaret Thatchers berüchtigter, zum Dogma einer neo-liberalen Politik der angeblich absoluten Selbstverantwortung des einzelnen Marktakteurs gewordenen Äußerung von 1987. Gleichzeitig ist seit dem Objekt-Werden der Idee von Gesellschaft durch ihre wissenschaftliche Betrachtung im 19. Jahrhundert die Unmöglichkeit eines solchen Unterfanges evident. Denn wie soll sich etwas empirisch fixieren lassen, was selbst als Begriff lediglich Signifikant ist fu?r das ewig Prozessuale per se: die Produktion der Verhältnisse menschlicher
Gemeinschaft.
Die spezifischen Mechanismen und Strukturen, die fu?r unsere Gesellschaft und damit auch fu?r unsere alltägliche, individuell erfahrene Lebensrealität konstitutiv sind, entziehen sich oftmals direkter Sichtbarkeit und lassen sich lediglich retrospektiv von ihren Effekten her untersuchen.
In ihrer künstlerischen Praxis findet Rita McBride hier ein Potential: durch Sezession und Überhöhung, durch Serialität und materielle Transformation, wie auch den Modus der Ausstellung als spezifischen Modus des Sehens u?berhaupt, lässt sie einzelne Elemente herausgestellt fokussieren und ihre funktionellen Kontexte sichtbar rendern.
In ihrer aktuellen Werkgruppe untersucht die Künstlerin Schlüssel als Material und Kulturtechnik, die in ihrer Funktionsweise als von aktivierenden Kontexten abhängige Aktionspotentiale nicht nur zentrale Mechanismen der Strukturierung von Zugang innerhalb menschlicher Gemeinschaften sind, sondern auch Allegorien auf vielfältige gesellschaftliche Phänomene bilden. Und so wie bestimmte Schlüssel lediglich bestimmte Schlösser zu öffnen vermögen und ein Schlüssel ohne das Wissen um das zugehörige Schloss ohne Bedeutung ist, so sind Zeichen und Ornamente, als Elemente der visuellen Organisation einer Gesellschaft, auf einen jeweils spezifischen Kontext zur
Entfaltung von Bedeutung angewiesen und Formen von Semantik stets auch Effekte einer Pragmatik.

The Konrad Fischer Galerie is pleased to announce its third solo exhibition with Rita McBride, entitled “Gesellschaft” (Society).
The concept of society has always been problematic: that it exists as a form of an organised or organising community of individuals cannot be denied – and that despite Margaret Thatcher’s notorious statement from 1987 that has become a dogma of the neo-liberal politics of the supposed absolute self-responsibility of the individual market player. At the same time, however, the impossibility of such an undertaking has been evident since the objectification of the idea of society through its scientific observation in the 19th century. For how can something be fixed empirically that is significant solely as a concept for the eternally processual per se, namely the production of the conditions of human community?
The specific mechanisms and structures that are constitutive for our society and thus also for our everyday individually experienced reality often elude direct visualisation and consequently can only be examined in retrospect with a view to their effects.
Rita McBride finds a potential here in her artistic practice: she focuses on individual emphasised elements and visibly renders their functional contexts by means of secession and idealisation, seriality and material transformation in addition to the mode of the exhibition as well as the altogether specific mode of seeing.
In her current group of works the artist examines keys as a material and cultural technique which in their functionality as action potentials dependent on activating contexts are not only central mechanisms in the structuring of access within human communities but also shape allegories of varied societal phenomena. And just as certain keys are consequently only capable of opening certain locks and a key is meaningless without the knowledge of its corresponding lock, signs and ornaments as elements of the visual organisation of a society are reliant on a respective specific context in order to unfold meaning and semantic forms that are consistently also effects of pragmatism.
